Make & Play! Slime Synthesizer Sinfonia
This workshop features the “Slime Synthesizer,” a unique musical instrument that is played by touching or transforming slime, and is led by the creators themselves. By manipulating the fluid, it is almost like you are grasping clouds of air. Winner of a New Face Award at the 18th Japan Media Arts Festival, the electronic musical instrument was also a big hit at Maker Faire Tokyo. In this workshop, participants will make the slime and combine it with the synthesizer to create their own musical instruments. Alongside learning hands-on about the basics of science such as the three states of matter (solid, gas and liquid) and electrical resistance, participants can also experience the fun of making their own electronic musical instruments, which is now a major trend in Japanese maker culture. The workshop will end with all the participants playing their instruments together and performing an original symphony for Maker Faire Singapore. Through learning about the foundations of science and making their own devices, participants can experience a new style of performance and musical expression completely different to what is played with conventional instruments and music. Discover the possibilities and creativity of DIY and maker culture! Suitable for 10-15 year olds
Organized by the Japan Foundation Asia Center.
Supprted by Gakken Plus Co.,Ltd.

Dorita
Creative director
Based in Tokyo, Dorita’s career as an artist started in 2012. Her projects use electronic devices to create new experiences out of combining the five senses in alternate ways, such as sight with taste, or hearing with sight. “Slime Synthesizer,” co-created with Yumi Sasaki, won a New Face Award at the 18th Japan Media Arts Festival. In 2016, “Bug’s Beat,” a concert made from the minute footsteps of insects recorded by special microphones attached to their feet, was presented at Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions 2016. Her work uses high tech to create low-tech art, such as by changing the digital into the physical.

Yumi Sasaki
Science museum employee, facilitator
Born in Tokyo in 1984. She works for a science museum in Tokyo, devising workshops and other projects for children to have fun with science. Her projects utilize electronic devices, inspired by her interests in sound, slime, engineering, electricity, insects, snails, crystals and minerals. In 2015, she appeared on a television program where she took a research trip to India to study the raw material guar gum in order to find the most flexible type of slime in the world. “Slime Synthesizer,” co-created with Dorita, won a New Face Award at the 18th Japan Media Arts Festival. “Bug’s Beat” was presented at Yebisu International Festival for Art & Alternative Visions 2016.

Computational Thinking Computational Tinkerer
Computational Thinking has been said to be the fourth R, in
tandem with the current 3R (Reading, wRiting, and aRithmetic).

In this workshop, we will give a gentle introduction to CT via
three fun and thought-provoking hands-on activities that expose
participants to the FUN and the thinking processes behind CT.

These activities include some of the following:
(a) Bill Gates and Pancake Flipping (introduction to algorithms!)
(b) Reading your mind with matheMAGIC,
(c) Fun with Sorting Networks,
(d) Looking at our world recursively,
(e) learning AI with Tic-Tac-Toe

The workshop will close with reflections on how these activities
link to real-life problem solving in computer science and everyday
things in our lives.

I will be conducting 2 types of workshops…
1) Play with Glass: Mosaic

• A Mosaic is a picture or design constructed from several smaller pieces.

• At the Anjali Design workshop, Anjali Venkat will explain the principles of mosaic, use of colour and design, before giving participants the opportunity to create their own mosaic.

• In addition, she will also demonstrate how to create the components of the mosaic, by cutting pieces of glass, mirror and vitreous glass tile. If interested, participants will have the opportunity to try their hand at this unusual skill. Protective glasses will be provided.

• Participants will be provided with pre-cut and tumbled pieces of glass and tile to be stuck on pre-cut pieces of wood, that are approximately 6″x 4” in size. The glass/tiles are tumbled to remove sharp edges and the adhesive used is non-toxic.

• Once the mosaic is assembled, it is left to dry. The participants will then learn the process of grouting and will see a demonstration. The grouting process can take place only 24 hours after sticking the glass, because the adhesive has to dry completely. ?In this workshop, Anjali will provide some powdered grout for the participant to finish the work at home.

• The beautiful mosaic created by the participant can be used as a coaster or a piece of wall art
• Participants are advised to dress comfortably, wear covered shoes and tie their hair back.

Age: 5 years + Time: 1 hour Cost: 25 SGD

2) Play with Glass: Soldering

• The art of stained glass is a beautiful combination of colour and design. Stained glass windows have been admired for their beauty since the time of ancient Rome.

• At the Anjali Design workshop, Anjali Venkat will explain the process of designing and assembling a stained glass sun-catcher using copper foil and solder.

• The participants will be provided with pieces of coloured glass in different shapes, and will be taught how to solder these glass pieces to join them together. The finished sun-catcher can be taken home.

• Participants are advised to dress comfortably, wear covered shoes and tie their hair back.
